I'm Michelle
Because you shouldn’t have to choose just one moment to remember, this is your way to hold on to the whole story.
Because some moments are meant to be seen as they unfold, movement, emotion, and the beauty of this season, just as it was.
Some places leave a mark on your family long after you’ve returned home. Our stay at Morgan’s Rock Reserve & Ecolodge was one of those rare experiences where adventure, nature, and meaningful family moments come together in the most magical way! If you are searching for a truly unforgettable place to stay in Nicaragua, Morgan’s Rock Reserve & Ecolodge is truly something special.
Tucked into the jungle along a secluded stretch of coastline near San Juan del Sur, Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua is a luxury eco-lodge set within a 4,000-acre private nature reserve of protected tropical forest. The property blends breathtaking scenery, incredible wildlife, and meaningful adventure in a way that feels both immersive and peaceful.

Another magical feature of the property is the estuary that winds through the reserve, where guests can kayak quietly through the water while spotting birds, monkeys, and other wildlife along the shoreline or have fun fishing. It adds another layer of exploration beyond the beach and jungle trails and makes the landscape feel even more diverse and alive.
Our family of four; two adults and our two boys (ages 10 and 12), recently spent several days at Morgan’s Rock, and it quickly became one of our favorite family travel experiences. Between the wildlife, the private beach, the welcoming staff, and the incredible adventures, it was the kind of trip that stays with you long after you return home.
If you’re considering visiting Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua, here’s what our experience was like.

We stayed in the Family Villa Suite at Morgan’s Rock, which was absolutely perfect for traveling with kids.
The villa gave our boys their own bedroom while my husband and I had our own space, making it incredibly comfortable for a family stay. One of the highlights of the suite was the private plunge pool and outdoor lounge area overlooking the jungle.
Every morning and evening we would relax on the terrace and watch the wildlife around us.
Some of the animals we spotted right from our villa included parrots and parakeets flying overhead and howler monkeys moving through the jungle canopy
It felt like having a front-row seat to nature.

One of the things that makes Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua so special is its completely private beach.
Unlike many beach destinations that feel busy or crowded, the beach at Morgan’s Rock feels untouched and peaceful. Surrounded by jungle-covered hills, it’s one of the most beautiful settings.
The coastline itself is incredibly unique, with beautiful rocky formations and tide pools that appear at low tide. The tide pools are not only stunning but also a wonderful place for kids to explore, discovering shells, small fish, and other marine life hidden in the shallow pools.
Our days often included:
The combination of ocean and jungle makes Morgan’s Rock feel incredibly unique compared to other beach destinations in Central America. We travel a lot and it’s hard to come by both beach and jungle in the same location.

If you love wildlife, Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua is extraordinary.
The ecolodge sits inside a protected nature reserve, which means the surrounding jungle is full of animals and birds.
During our stay we saw:
• Howler monkeys
• Capuchin monkeys
• Sloths
• An anteater sleeping in a tree
• A wide variety of birds; parrots, parakeets, trojans, kingfishers, jays, Nicaragua’s national bird; the turquoise-browed motmot
• A porcupine that slept tucked in the wooden beams of the outdoor lounge by the pool during the day and climbed the surrounding trees each night
• Baby sea turtles hatching (a dream come true!)
Every day felt like stepping into a nature documentary.
For kids especially, it’s an incredible opportunity to see wildlife up close in its natural habitat. My youngest son loves taking wildlife photos so he was in heaven running around with his camera and zoom lens snapping photos!

One of the highlights of our stay at Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua was the Sloth and Monkey Quest with our guide, Luis.
Luis was phenomenal with our boys and incredibly knowledgeable about the ecosystem and wildlife around the property.

My boys absolutely love nature and wildlife, so they especially enjoyed their conversations with Luis during the tour and bonding over their shared passion for animals. He shared so much fascinating information about the local wildlife, and by the end of the hike my youngest was even furthest convinced of his future career as a wildlife guide and photographer.
It quickly became their favorite day of the entire trip!

One of the most unique and cool features of Morgan’s Rock is the awesome swing bridge that connects the lodges to the restaurant and beach. Suspended above the jungle canopy, it is an experience in itself.
We crossed the bridge each morning on our way to breakfast, when we went back and forth to our room, and in evenings as we walked to dinner. It quickly became one of our favorite parts of the property. It’s so cool and unique!
We found ourselves lingering there often, scanning the surrounding trees for wildlife. The bridge offers such a unique vantage point, almost at eye level with the jungle canopy.
On our very first morning, we spotted a family of howler monkeys, including several tiny babies, hanging out in the trees just steps away from us. Seeing them up close and personal while standing on the bridge was such a special way to begin our stay.
The swing bridge perfectly captures the spirit of Morgan’s Rock, thoughtful, immersive, adventurous, and deeply connected to the surrounding nature.

One evening we did a sunset hike along the ridge above the coastline, and it turned into one of those rare travel moments you never forget.
From one side of the ridge we watched the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean.
From the other side we watched the full moon rising over the jungle.
Experiences like that are what make Morgan’s Rock so magical!

Another unforgettable experience during our stay at Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua was witnessing baby leatherback sea turtles hatching and making their way to the ocean.
We saw this happen two mornings during our stay, and it was incredible.
Watching dozens of tiny turtles instinctively crawl across the sand toward the ocean is something our family will never forget. Sea turtles are my favorite, and while we’ve been fortunate to witness loggerhead turtles hatch twice near our home in Eastern North Carolina, this was our first time seeing leatherback turtles.
I’m always in awe of God’s creation. It’s amazing to think how these tiny turtles survive buried beneath the weight of the sand, instinctively dig their way to the surface, follow the light of the moon, and then begin their long journey to the ocean and out toward the Sargasso Sea.
Before they disappeared into the waves, we paused to say a little prayer and blessing over them for their safety from predators and living a long turtle life 🙂
It was one of those moments that reminds you how extraordinary God’s creation truly is.

The food and drinks at Morgan’s Rock were wonderful and made even more special by the lodge’s farm-to-table philosophy. We are very health conscious about food and the quality and Morgan’s Rock did not disappoint.
Most of the food served at the restaurant comes directly from their on-site organic farm, with fresh ingredients harvested daily. Seafood is sourced locally as well, making the experience truly farm-and-sea-to-table. You can taste the freshness in everything, from the delicious fruit juices to the beautifully prepared meals.
The staff went out of their way to make our family feel comfortable and were especially accommodating to my kids (and my husband who basically eats like a kid, ha) who can be picky eaters. Several days the chef was able to prepare something upon request that wasn’t on the menu, which is something every parent can appreciate when traveling.
Breakfast is also included with your stay, and it’s a wonderful way to start the day with fresh tropical fruit, juices, and thoughtfully prepared dishes before heading out for a morning hike, surf session, or wildlife adventure.
But there is one thing I’m still dreaming about.
The fresh passionfruit juice.
And the Macua mocktail.
Just trust me and order it.
Traditionally the Macua is made with guava, but since guava was out of season during our stay they made it with passionfruit instead, and it was absolutely incredible! I don’t drink alcohol anymore so I got it virgin. Still trying to figure out how I can grow passionfruit in North Carolina, ha!
After a day hiking through the jungle, surfing in the waves, or exploring the trails around the property, it was the perfect refreshing drink to sip while watching the ocean from the terrace or lounging by the pool.

Morgan’s Rock is located about three hours from Managua International Airport near the coastal town of San Juan del Sur.
The lodge arranged our transportation, and the process was completely seamless.
The drive itself gives you a chance to see a peak into the Nicaraguan way of life and more of Nicaragua’s countryside before arriving at the lodge.
What makes Morgan’s Rock Nicaragua so special is the balance between luxury and adventure.
Parents can relax in a beautiful, peaceful setting while kids have endless opportunities to explore nature, learn about wildlife, and experience real adventure. The staff were also incredibly warm and welcoming throughout our stay.
For families who love:
• Wildlife
• Nature
• Birding
• Surfing (great for kids + beginners with smaller waves than nearby beaches)
• Kayaking
• Outdoor adventure
• Beautiful beaches
• Meaningful travel experiences
Morgan’s Rock is the perfect destination.

Our stay at Morgan’s Rock Reserve & Ecolodge was one of the most memorable family trips we’ve taken.
Between the wildlife encounters, the secluded beach, the beautiful villas, and the incredibly friendly staff and guides, it felt like the perfect combination of luxury travel and nature immersion and adventure.
If you are looking for a truly unique place to stay in Nicaragua, Morgan’s Rock is absolutely worth experiencing.
It’s the kind of destination where memories are made, where mornings begin with jungle sounds, days are filled with ocean and adventure, and evenings end under the stars.
And long after you leave, you’ll still find yourself dreaming about it.

Morgan’s Rock Hacienda & Ecolodge is located near San Juan del Sur on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, about a three-hour drive from Managua International Airport.
Absolutely! Morgan’s Rock is an excellent destination for families who love nature and adventure. Kids can enjoy wildlife hikes, surfing, boogie boarding, kayaking, and exploring the jungle while parents relax in a luxury eco-lodge setting.
Guests often see howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, sloths, anteaters, sea turtles, wide variety of birds including; parrots, parakeets, and Nicaragua’s national bird, the turquoise-browed motmot. Spider monkeys also live there, but we didn’t get to see them.
Yes. Morgan’s Rock sits on a secluded stretch of private beach surrounded by jungle-covered hills, making it one of the most peaceful beaches in Nicaragua.
The sheltered bay creates gentle waves that are perfect for swimming, body surfing, and beginner surfers, while experienced surfers can easily access some of Nicaragua’s world-class surf breaks just a short drive away.
No, the villas at Morgan’s Rock do not have air conditioning, as the ecolodge is designed to work in harmony with the surrounding environment. The villas are open to the natural breezes from the ocean and jungle, and during our stay there was a constant, refreshing breeze flowing through the rooms.
My husband and boys tend to run hot, so they were initially a little concerned about the lack of AC. But it honestly ended up being very comfortable, especially in the evenings.
Instead of air conditioning, the rooms feature a specialized “Evening Breeze” cooling system positioned directly over the beds that gently blows cool air while you sleep, helping keep the beds at a comfortable temperature throughout the night. Between the natural airflow and this thoughtful design, we slept great and never felt uncomfortable.
Sea turtle nesting season along Nicaragua’s Pacific coast typically runs from July through January, with peak hatchings occurring between September and December. During this time, guests staying at Morgan’s Rock have a good opportunity to witness baby turtles emerging from their nests and making their way to the ocean—an unforgettable wildlife experience.
We traveled in early March and were lucky enough to witness baby leatherback sea turtles hatch on two separate mornings during our stay, which was absolutely incredible.
Because turtle hatchings happen naturally and unpredictably, sightings are never guaranteed, but visiting during nesting and hatching season offers the best chance to experience this magical moment.
If you love destinations that blend nature, wildlife, and meaningful family adventure, our African safari at Mahali Mzhuri was another magical family trip!

These photographs become treasures passed through generations. Your children will one day hold these images close, seeing themselves through your loving eyes and discovering the quiet grace that surrounded their earliest days.
